The Sorcerer Heir
......
by Cinda Williams Chima
Release Date: 4 November 2014
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

The delicate peace between Wizards and the underguilds (Warriors, Seers, Enchanters, and Sorcerers) still holds by the thinnest of threads, but powerful forces inside and outside the guilds threaten to sever it completely.

Emma and Jonah are at the center of it all. Brought together by their shared history, mutual attraction, and a belief in the magic of music, they now stand to be torn apart by new wounds and old betrayals. As they struggle to rebuild their trust in each other, Emma and Jonah must also find away to clear their names as the prime suspects in a series of vicious murders. It seems more and more likely that the answers they need lie buried in the tragedies of the past. The question is whether they can survive long enough to unearth them.

Old friends and foes return as new threats arise in this stunning and revelatory conclusion to the beloved and bestselling Heir Chronicles series.

Review:The Canticle Kingdom (The Canticle Kingdom #1) by Michael Young

Summary-
It seemed like ages since Kate's father went off to war, and she is eager to
thank him for the beautiful German music box he sent for her birthday. But
when it starts playing a strange, new melody and Kate vanishes into thin air,
Captain Edison is willing to do anything to rescue his little girl.

When the Canticle Kingdom is attacked and the queen falls deathly ill, Joann,
a young blacksmith's apprentice, learns a terrible secret - the kingdom is contained
entirely within a music box in another world.. With the help pf his friends, Johann
races to bring aid from that other world in an effort to stop the dark power that
threatens to destroy them all.
Enter a beautiful world full of magic, danger, loyalty, and bravery in
The Canticle Kingdom, and discover that even the most ordinary objects
and people might be hiding something truly wonderful inside.

Review-
The Canticle Kingdom is set during the 1940's and World War II. A small, innocent-looking music box travels from Germany to St. Louis, Missouri (where I live!!), causing mayhem wherever it goes. The world WITHIN the music box is also in turmoil. This fantasy tale tells a story of magic, strange beasts, love, courage, determination, and strength. Protagonists, Johann and Brigitta, get the adventure that they have always craved, probably more adventure than they ever wanted.

Author Michael Young is a brilliant fantasy author who has created an alternate world unlike anything that readers have seen. A blank space where one never ages, ferocious creatures made of stone, secrets and lies told over centuries. This book was a fantastic read! I'm giving it 4 stars out of 5 only because the machinations of the music box that keep the world inside of it intact was a bit confusing to me. A map or drawing would have been cool. And I'm not sure what the smelly liquid in the barrels was. Perhaps oil for the mechanism? Overall, I loved the story!

Review: Press play by Eric Devine

Summary-
Greg Dunsmore, a.k.a. Dun the Ton, is focused on one thing: making a documentary that will guarantee his admission into the film school of his choice. Every day, Greg films his intense weight-loss focused workouts as well as the nonstop bullying that comes from his classmates. But when he captures footage of violent, extreme hazing by his high school’s championship-winning lacrosse team in the presence of his principal, Greg’s field of view is in for a readjustment.
Greg knows there is a story to be told, but it is not clear exactly what. And his attempts to find out the truth only create more obstacles, not to mention physical harm upon himself. Yet if Greg wants to make his exposé his ticket out of town rather than a veritable death sentence, he will have to learn to play the game and find a team to help him.
Combine the underbelly of Friday Night Lights with the unflinching honesty of Walter Dean Myers, and you will find yourself with Eric Devine’s novel of debatable truths, consequences, and realities.

Review-
This book is a solid four star book and would be a five star but I felt that author Eric Devine got a tad bit too confusing when his characters discussed their thoughts and plans. However, the book in its entirety was absolutely awesome! The premise is a high school geek who is overweight, wants to be a film-maker, and tends to fudge when he makes school documentaries. He uncovers a lot of secrets his junior year--hazing, sexual molestation, bullying, etc--and decides to finally man up and start telling the truth to save those around him.

The book was very fast-paced and action-filled. Devine captures the craziness and intensity of youth very well, which is no surprise considering that he is a high school English teacher. Greg, the protagonist, and his band of misfits, Ella, Quinn, and Ollie are likable and sympathetic characters that teens will easily identify with. And the outcome? Well, let's just say that it knocked me for a loop! Happy Reading:)

Review: The summer prince by Alaya Dawn Johnson

Summary-
A heart-stopping story of love, death, technology, and art set amid the tropics of a futuristic Brazil.
The lush city of Palmares Três shimmers with tech and tradition, with screaming gossip casters and practiced politicians. In the midst of this vibrant metropolis, June Costa creates art that’s sure to make her legendary. But her dreams of fame become something more when she meets Enki, the bold new Summer King. The whole city falls in love with him (including June’s best friend, Gil). But June sees more to Enki than amber eyes and a lethal samba. She sees a fellow artist.
Together, June and Enki will stage explosive, dramatic projects that Palmares Três will never forget. They will add fuel to a growing rebellion against the government’s strict limits on new tech. And June will fall deeply, unfortunately in love with Enki. Because like all Summer Kings before him, Enki is destined to die.Pulsing with the beat of futuristic Brazil, burning with the passions of its characters, and overflowing with ideas, this fiery novel will leave you eager for more from Alaya Dawn Johnson.

Review-
I liked it. it is about a post-apostolic world, down in South America, where a city state is ruled by a queen, selected by a man, who is slaughter. this man gets to live in luxury and freedom for the time he is the summer prince. June, an artist, meets Enki, who is the summer king, and together they create art and fall in love. in this book, women and men can take both genders as lovers and this makes the beginning very interesting. I still haven't figured out if Enki's first lover, June's best friend, is a boy or girl(i think boy most likey). its good and i liked it. june is a fun and strong charcter.

Review: Shadows (Ashes Trilogy #2) by Ilsa J. Bick

Summary-
The Apocalypse does not end. The Changed will grow in numbers. The Spared may not survive.
Even before the EMPs brought down the world, Alex was on the run from the demons of her past and the monster living in her head. After the world was gone, she believed Rule could be a sanctuary for her and those she’d come to love.
But she was wrong.
Now Alex is in the fight of her life against the adults, who would use her, the survivors, who don’t trust her, and the Changed, who would eat her alive.
Welcome to Shadows, the second book in the haunting apocalyptic Ashes Trilogy: where no one is safe and humans may be the worst of the monsters.

Review-
Shadows is even BETTER than Ashes, if that's possible. Still following Alex, Ellie and Tom, plus a ton of other new characters, Shadows keeps the reader on her toes. There is so much activity going on in this second book of the trilogy, as survivors try to rebuild their lives, that this 518 page book goes very fast!
The Zap has turned people into creatures similar to zombies but so much more advanced. Any kids who haven't turned are extremely rare and are being used as bargaining chips, money, and experiments. Tragic but hopeful, still packed with plenty of intrigue, romance, adventure, and stories of survival and strength, Shadows is another excellent read by Ilsa Bick.
