Review: The Year of The Great Seventh by Teresa Orts

Summary_
Sophie has always felt out of step—an outsider, even amongst friends in her high school with all the hype about celebrity culture. Her life in L.A. seems to have been already written for her, but when her junior year starts, it all takes a drastic turn. When she crosses paths with the school's heartthrob, Nate Werner, they fall for each other in a way neither can understand. What they don’t know is that by giving in to their desires, they are unlocking an ancient Egyptian prophecy that threatens to return Earth to the dark ages.
To undo the curse, Nate and Sophie embark on an adventure that takes them across the country. But their quest is not only to save the world as they know it. It is also a fight for their very survival. Behind the scenes, there are those that are counting on them to fail.

Review-
The Year of The Great Seventh was a fun book to read although the first third of the book misled me greatly. I hadn't read the blurb on the book because I like to start a book completely new. My assumption upon reading the first few chapters was that this book was only a young adult book. Sophie, the protagonist, is a typical teenager who is absorbed with school, friends, hot guys, a scholarship for college, grades, clothes, parties and hot guys. After the somewhat slow start, however, the book started getting exciting! Teresa Orts introduces a paranormal twist that is scary but fun, like going to a haunted house. The HOT GUY that Sophie has been crushing on for two years, Nate Werner, is possessed with an ancient Egyptian curse. Sophie finds out that she is actually part of the curse as well. Author Teresa Orts tells this story with a gritty and real voice. Teen sex, giving up one's life for another, showbiz moms, drugs and alcohol, mean girls, nothing is sacred. Each subject is laid out and discussed in between solving the mystery of the curse before it's too late for these star-crossed lovers. The ending.....Wow!!!! Four and a half stars for this exciting story!
